Ask him or her all these questions and request all the information you need to make an informed decision to buy. A dealer must be able to provide you with a detailed description of the work, situating it in its cultural and historical context. He or she will also give you advice on its conservation. The dealer guarantees the description provided and the work’s authenticity. Expertise and professionalism are the essential qualities of a specialised dealer.

You have two options. A dealer may buy a work from you at a price you agree upon. In that case the dealer purchases it outright. Alternatively, the dealer may take your art work on consignment. In that case, he or she sells it for you.

You can also leave the work with the dealer on consignment. In that case, the dealer draws up a consignment agreement to be signed by both parties. The agreement will include a description of the work and the conditions governing the consignment. Additional information may be added regarding insurance, restoration expenses and transport costs, for example.
